Week2b - Business Research

  Protein for Pets 

  1. This is a pet food located in Vista, CA. This store is small but there are 6 more locations in San Diego County. They are owned by Bentley's Pet Stuff located in Illinois. They have a total of 64 locations in 10 states. The one thing that sets them apart from other pet food stores is the no corn, no wheat, no soy in any of their products. Corn can lead to problems like obesity and diabetes in your pets. Wheat can cause skin irritation and ear infections. Soy can lead to a leaky gut and even cancer.  

  1. On the website, there is a link on the bottom for Facebook. It is a Facebook for the San Diego County locations. There are no links to the different stores for any other social media. I do know that there is an Instagram page for the Vista location. The last post on Facebook was March 28, 2022. There are zero likes and comments. On the Vista Instagram page we have 280 followers. The last post was July 22, 2022. It was a video of some of the new Preppy Puppy treats. There were 59 views and 1 comment.  

  1. This company has an Instagram and doesn’t use it to the full potential. There is very little engagement.  

 

 Petco 

  1. This is a nationwide pet food chain.  

  1. Petco utilizes five different platforms. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube. Facebook has over 3 million likes. The last post was on September 3, it had 189 likes, 26 comments, and 12 shares. Twitter has 5,451 followers. The last tweet was just a few hours ago (9/4/22). It seems that people use Petco Twitter to voice their concerns and Petco answers. Pinterest has 33.3k followers. The last pin was September 4, 2022. Instagram has 691k followers. The last post from Instagram was on September 3rd, 2022. It has 748 likes and 21 comments. YouTube has 92.7k subscribersThe last video that was posted was 6 years ago. The Petco website didn’t have a TikTok symbol, but I checked to see if they had one. On TikTok they have 30.6k followers. The last video that was posted was August 26, 2022. It had 42.7k viewers on that video, 389 likes and 496 comments.  

  1. They are the second largest pet food retailer and have over 1,500 locations. They are well known and have a large following, both online and in-store. Petco uses Twitter to interact and answers questions/concerns of people. Twitter gets used constantly for people to voice their issues.  

 

Carlsbad Pet and Feed 

  1. This is a locally owned business with just 3 stores and a groom room. There are two stores in Carlsbad and one store and a groom room in Vista. 

  1. On the website there is a Facebook and Instagram link. There was not much on the Facebook page. No reviews and only two pictures of cardboard boxes. Their Instagram has 1,018 followers. The last post was made on September 4, 2022. It had 50 likes and no comments. 

  1. They have very little social media presence, but they do use Instagram and have a small following. They use Instagram to show sales and promotions and dogs that come in.  

 

Kahoots 

  1. This company started in Southern California and has 21 total locations.  

  1. On the website there is a Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube link. The Facebook page for the Carlsbad location has 648 likes and the last post was September 4, 2022. It had no comments and only 4 likes. Their Instagram last post was on Labor Day and has 19 likes. Their YouTube account has 25 subscribers, and the last post was 3 months ago. 

  1. Kahoots has a small following online. They do use Instagram the most. They use it to promote deals, new inventory, and the pets that come in.  

 

Pets Plus 

  1. Their website has very little information. Local owned with only 8 locations. There are no links to any social media on the website. I used Google next, since I couldn’t find anything on the website. On Google the links were Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.  

  1. There was nothing on Twitter. Facebook had some posts but the last one was December 2020. Instagram has 1,325 followers and the last post was September 5, 2022. They seem to post every few days on Instagram. 

  1. Even though they have very little online, they still use Instagram. Instagram seems to be the best when it comes to these small, local pet food stores.  
     

 

All these businesses use social media differently. I think that Petco has the advantage of being the second largest pet retailer and having someone dedicated to just social media. Petco uses all the popular social media outlets and uses them well. I was not surprised by this; they have the money to hire a social media manager. It shows what a business can do if they know how social media works.    

Some of the smaller businesses rely on their employees to do social media. I know about Protein for Pets; the manager oversees the Vista page. While he does use all the social media apps personally, he is not trained to promote a business. He has done well with what he knows but I know that we can build a better social media page
